A heat pump is a type of air conditioner that includes an indoor unit and an outdoor compressor. It can both heat and cool your home. There are mainly two kinds: air-source and ground-source. Air-source heat pumps are the go-to choice for home heating and cooling. When it’s hot outside, the indoor unit takes away the unwanted heat and humidity from your home and sends it outside. During colder months, the process flips – the outdoor unit grabs heat from the outside air (yes, even winter air has some heat) and brings it indoors to warm your house.

A mini split, also called a ductless heat pump, offers heating and cooling without the need for ducts. It’s a great option instead of radiators, baseboards, or window AC units. You just install one or more units inside your home on the wall or ceiling, with a matching unit outside.

SEER, which stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, serves as a key indicator in measuring the maximum efficiency of an air conditioning unit over a typical cooling season. This rating is crucial because it tells you how effectively the unit converts electricity into cooling power, making it an essential factor to consider when selecting a new air conditioner. The higher the SEER rating, the more efficiently the air conditioning unit operates, potentially leading to lower electricity bills and a reduced environmental impact.
